Starting with a customer’s white oak slice, I designed a base to match the unusual contours of the perimeter. The slab was so cupped, warped, that the only way to get it flat enough to work with was breaking it three pieces. Thinking about the Japanese art of Kintsugi, making repairs in pottery a part of the story, rather than something to disguise, I determined to let the cracks speak for themselves.

Copper butterflies, custom-made for me, stitch together the pieces. The base was charred using the traditional Japanese method of wood preservation, Yakisugi.
